I never seem to tire of seeing a horse run freely, whether it be through lush pasture or snowy fields. It always gives me a moment of pause, a deep breath, such awe at the speed and power. Farmer Sandy’s recent Facebook post of Clyde and DeeDee running across the field in the snow offered me this moment to wonder.
Even though Clyde and DeeDee are probably running through the snow because they feel good, are being social or being fed, there is something mysterious when you allow yourself to think about the equine’s fight or flight temperament. No matter how much we domesticate this animal, deep inside there is still that primal instinct to consider.
Understanding this primal instinct has allowed humans to make greater connections with horses, and when misunderstood destroy all connections. Simple movements of our bodies and our breath tell the horse who we are and what we want. As humans, we truly can talk with horses, if we take the time to learn the language.
Farmer’s Helpers at Chip-In Farm have two up-coming spring programs for young enthusiast to begin to learn the language of horses. Sign-ups for Pony Power Hour (ages 2.5 – 5) and Horse Course (Gr. K-5) begins March 3, 2025 at 8:00 p.m. Here is a link, that will become live, to sign-up through our website calendar. Sign-up is through The Bedford Recreation Department.
